Choosing tags that do something

  1. 1

    Mix broad, mid and niche

A few large tags for surface area, several mid-sized where you can realistically rank, and one or two very specific ones where your actual buyers are. All-broad is invisible; all-niche reaches nobody.

  2. 2

Match the tag to the post, not the account

A recycled block describes your brand in general. Tags chosen for this particular post reach the people interested in this particular thing, which is the only reason to use them.

  3. 3

Check a tag before you commit to it

Open it. If the top posts are nothing like yours, you will not rank and the audience is wrong anyway. Thirty seconds of looking beats a saved list nobody has audited in a year.

  4. 4

    Respect the per-network ceiling

Threads permits one. LinkedIn treats more than three as noise. Instagram's thirty is a maximum, not a target — and using all of it is a recognisable tell.

Questions

How many hashtags should I use?
Fewer than most people think, and it differs by network. Three to five specific tags outperform thirty broad ones on Instagram; Threads allows exactly one; LinkedIn reads more than three as spam. The table below has the per-network answer.
Is it free?
Yes, on the free plan — 10 AI generations a month, no credit card. Each hashtag set counts as one generation.
Do banned or broken hashtags matter?
Yes. A tag that has been restricted can suppress the reach of the whole post, not just fail to help it. This is one reason recycling the same saved block for years is risky — tags go bad quietly.
Should I put hashtags in the caption or a comment?
On Instagram it makes little measurable difference to reach, so choose on appearance. On X they cost you characters you need, so a reply is usually better. On LinkedIn they belong in the post itself.
Why not just reuse one set every time?
Because it optimises for the wrong thing. A saved block is convenient but describes your account in general, not this post — and tags matched to the specific post are what reach the people interested in it.
Do hashtags still work at all?
Less than they did for pure discovery, more than nothing for categorisation. Treat them as a signal telling the network what a post is about rather than as a distribution strategy in themselves.
